Link Building, the worst job for a webmaster

Link building for a new or existing web site is one of those tasks that can easily be put off until tomorrow. We’re all beginning to understand the importance of it, what we do not like is the real effort that has to go in to maintaining and building quality links.
We’ve been in the industry for many years and have a pretty decent network of sites, contacts and techniques that makes link building less of a brain ache task. In many ways it is similar to a telesales person who has to cold call people and introduce their company and services; there will be good days and bad. Sometimes it is easy, sometimes you can’t buy a link. We are asked about this stuff quite often, so we thought it was worthwhile providing some additional information about link building. Of course, you are always welcome to have a look at our SEO Price List if the thought of doing it yourself scares you too much.
In our experience, we can give you one very important piece of advice; please make sure your links are as relevant to the topic of your web site as possible. It’s no good putting your link on page about washing machines if you’re trying to sell fishing gear.
We also recommend that you do not try to buildall of your links in one day, the quickest way to raise a flag with the major search engines is to suddenly find yourself with an extra 1,000 backlinks; slow and gradual works best. Remember that search engine optimisation is not a race and does not happen overnight. If you want instant success, compliment your SEO with pay per click.
Placing your link on directory pages is not a bad thing, if you have the budget we would recommend the more well known sites such as Yahoo Directory. You could also try sites such as Webmaster Link Exchange, or similar themed sites.
At Generate UK we recognise that every company is different, each has different objectives with regards to their search engine optimisation and therefor their link building. We prefer to sit down with our clients and understand their goals and really start to understand what it is they are trying to achieve.

We agree, link building is tedious…but so important. But more important is a well-rounded SEO strategy that includes PPC and email marketing. We offer the entire program to all of our clients and in our own case studies, we have seen amazing increases in traffic.

Thanks for the post and the reminder to just do it all!!!!!

That’s absolutely true. Infact SEO and PPC are complementary strategies are should both be applied as an overall integral marketing plan. Infact, SEO KW targeting could be fine tuned through KW data collected from live PPC data. Also, it is more contigent to have a PPC plan even if your SEO is doing really well. The reason is to not put every egg into the same basket for business contingencies, ‘cos it is not uncommon for sites to suddenly be bumped down for several reasons often beyond their control, e.g change of SE algorithms, attack by hackers, etc.

I do most of all my link building myself but often wonder how much easier and successful my sites could be if I let some link building companies do all the work.

Excellent article, link building can be a full time job, it is hard to run your company and spend enough time finding QUALITY links that are relevant and Juicy. If you are competing against someone who has hired professionals either in house or an outside firm it will be hard to compete with them.

We agree. Linkbuilding is boring and is often a slow process. Nowadays however, it’s crucial for virtually every internet agency out there. You need links badly. It is as simple as that.

Here are some tips to speed up the linkbuilding proces:

- Autofill Forms. Great Firefox addon to automatically fill in forms.
- Fast Blog Finder. Awesome software with which you can find dofollow blogs.
- http://atniz.com/dofollow-search-engine/. Online dofollow search engine.

Good luck!

I must be one of the few people who enjoy the challenge of link building. There is something very satisfying about securing good relevant links. It’s not easy….if it was, it wouldn’t be valuable to SEO.
